So you’re an unposed photographer. Will you take my family portrait..? Geelong photographer Michelle McKay responds to this frequently asked question.
As a storytelling photographer my most dearest desire is to be a memory catcher.
I want to come to your home and I want to hang with you while your children play, giggle, pout, and squabble.
I want to be there to witness their idle wonder at the world and the way things work, to see their curiosity, their sense of adventure, and their sweetness.
I want them to be full of the reckless bouncing beans of childhood, to see their displays of camaraderie, to watch them puff their chests, and be their silly sausage selves.
Or, I wish to watch them during the quiet hours, drifting off to dreaming in your arms.
To me and my clients, these beautiful ordinary moments are the tiny crooked windows into your little one’s very nature and soul. It’s during these times when I might make a photograph that captures something of who they really are, of the child you know and adore.
A session with me lasts roughly two hours. I’ll come to your home, or meet you at a location of your choosing, and I’ll be with your family as you go about your business of simply being together.
I wont be telling you what to do, I wont be directing and prompting or pressuring anyone - goodness knows it can be tricky enough to get photographs made with little ones as it is!
But.
The question I get asked a lot.
Will you take our family’s portrait..?
Yes! Of course I will!
If a traditional portrait at the end of your family’s session is something that is important to you, I will absolutely make one for you.
There are plenty of reasons you might appreciate a beautiful photograph of everyone looking at the camera.
Perhaps it’s for grandma.
Maybe it’s a way to keep track of how the family has grown and multiplied over the years.
It could be for peace of mind, to guarantee you’ll get a quality photograph with everyone in the frame, all together.
So yes, I will happily take your family’s portrait.
And then I’ll take some more, in a less traditional style, during your session.
(Don’t worry, you don’t have to tell me which is your favourite.) ; )
You don’t have to choose.
For you, I’ll happily make both. x
